How To Play Any Version Of Phantasy Star Online For Free
04.07.08

As of January 9th, 2008 all Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst servers were taken offline. This PC version of the online game, which was originally released for the Dreamcast, was the last iteration that still had servers up and running. With so many many PSO addicts out there a solution was bound to be found and this solution manifested itself in the form of SCHTHACK Private Servers. Thanks to a community of hackers the freely available Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst setup file has been hacked to allow for free play on SCTHACK’s and other free private servers. I only mention SCHTHACK in particular because their forums have an large amount of information on how to get started and they seem to have a large userbase that’s constantly playing. Last I checked there were around 550 players online.
Along with the large userbase, a hacked SCTHACK exe is available which updates new patches made by the community. These patches can add quests, items, and other neat additions. Not only additions but you can also play any console version of the game on their servers as well. The currently supported version of the game are:
- Dreamcast Phantasy Star Online
- Dreamcast Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2
- Gamecube Phantasy Star Online Episodes I & II
- Gamecube Phantasy Star Online Episodes I & II Plus
- Gamecube Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution
- PC Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2
- PC Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst
Some really cool hack additions added to PSO BB are:
- Fully unlocked teams – No need to register points to unlock dressing room and other features.
- Balanced Episode IV drop rates – We’ve balanced all enemy drop rates to be fair to all Section IDs. You can find a chart of what each monster drops here.
- Rare item sharing – Similar to PSO’s young brother, Phantasy Star Universe, you can set your game to share rare items in order or in a random order.
- New Japanese content – You can obtain new mags and other equipment on our server.
- Multiple version server – Our server allows multiple consoles to connect to the same server as PC users. You can chat in the lobbies together, however, you cannot play together.
- Language support – PC Ver. 2 supports Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish and Korean. Gamecube supports English and Japanese. Blue Burst supports English only, except for untranslated Japanese quests.
Ok so now that you know the skinny on what PSO BB for free offers, here’s how you get up and running.
Then either download the fully patched game from the links provided or download the game and then apply patches and you like. My favorite patch of them all is the keyboard support for Vista that finally allows me to play again.
You then register a hunter id:
http://www.schtserv.com/bbregister.php
and you’re good to go.
When you start the game with the special exe for SCTHACK for the first time it will download all updates, then all you have to do is login, create a character, and you’re off and running!
For more guides and information on the servers check here.
Ok so you’re up and running, leveling up, getting items and meseta, and you remember how hacked the console versions of PSO were. How could a hacker driven PC version be any different. That’s really where SCTHACK servers shine in that they do not tolerate any hacking and GM’s can and will ban people. Check out the rules here.
So with a level hack free playing field, free servers, and a better version of the game than Sega’s original I can now see many many hours of my life fading away. See you online!

There is still quite a bit of hacking. Trainers work on the server, and super rare items have been duped – but it’s not as bad as on SEGA, I suppose. Also, GMs give out presents to members of their guilds. The balance is pretty messed up, but no moreso then usual I guess.
Great post! I love this game!!
Oh lord I just spent way too much time playing this… level 20
And I’ve looked into the hacking and yes it exists but they are actually trying to limit it.
i got it downloaded, and installed, updated.. but when i click start, the game wont come up, what do i do?
Holy crap, we were mention on some official looking website, anyways other GMs used to give out free stuff to people, I didn’t but with a new leader came some new rules and GMs are no longer allowed to make items without the new leader, Crono’s OK. This is pretty much to keep it for events.
Hey in need of a little help please I got it all set up but when I go to start game it says gameguard authenticating then a black screen pops up and BB shuts down can anyone give me some help?
i got it downloaded, and installed, updated.. but when i click start, the game wont Great post! I love this game!!

I’m pretty sure the xbox version isnt playable due to the xbox live , but besides that all versions can connect..
and for people saying hacking is still around.. It’s nothing compared to the sega servers. they were a total mess, schthack has done an amazing job with this server.
Not familiar with the droprates in ep 4 tho, since im on gc.
I’m pretty sure the xbox version isnt playable due to the xbox live , but besides that all versions can connect..
Any info for this on Wii?
I was pondering MMOs to get into, and remembered the fun I had playing PSO (Despite it all being offline).

Hi, I downloaded the game, but the site won’t let me register. It says i already registered for the day, which i didn’t. I try to play the game and of course it didn’t let me. My brother and i share our internet via linksys. Is it because we have same ip address or something?
haha WOOOOOOOOW been a long time since ive seen that on the loader but anyways, schtserv has went downhill in the last few months, corrupt admins and what have you. Blame crono
It doesn't work
All I can Say is I LOVE YOU! Lol, this game is one of my all time favorites. I just got a PSP solely for Phantasy Star Portable and it’s awesome. Pissed about the fact that you can only LAN play though. Maybe one of you Intellegent Hackers can make a dedicated server for PS Portable… Idk, it’s possible somehow. I would do everything I could to help with it.
By the way it does work!. After you update it just go to the PSObb Folder in properties. Then click on SHPsoBB.exe to run it. I’m playing it right now so it works for sure. Thank you SHTHACK! I hope this stays active for awhile.
Phantasy Star Portable info:
Designed for the PSP, this port from the Xbox 360’s Phantasy Star Universe, and has a unique story. I imported this shortly after its release and kept up to date. Currently, the only way to play this version is with a Wired internet as WELL as a Wireless Adapter compatible with SSID modifications. After the hardware is configured, you need the software. Xlink Kai has tried their best, but its still quite bothersome ordeal just to play a few games ‘online’.
The idea is that i would system link with my wireless adapter. The data communicated would transmit to targeted players found in a chatroom-based application and they would join the hosted game. After all players entered, one has about 6 seconds to A) start the game, B) Copy the new PSP Wifi ‘addy’(SSID) C) Paste to known players, D) Said players copy/paste E) Said players reset their wireless adapters to match. This is a limit set by Sony for un-clarified reasons. My guess is to prevent such actions, or Wifi code of conduct (or some such thing).
To make a ’server’ for this, one would also have to bypass this SSID change or Automate it. Apps have been made to modify this SSID, but none link to a server and change clients. Klink has discovered a method for a host to auto-track this SSID, but one needs to advance this idea and have it alter any clients. Once done, Phantasy Star Portable will be as simple to play online as Super Smash for the N64.
Alternate Method would be to hack the game for modded psp users, fusing the game with a wifi psp-server homebrew app. If this were your chosen path, i would suggest inspecting the differences in the Jap and Eng release. The Jap version had a Web browser interface which could download new content. I cant say for sure, but singling out this source and modifying it with some custom code shouldn’t be all that difficult, but making the code cooperate could be troublesome.
Hope that sparks some fires ^.^
Final Note: This information was given as a guide to those who wish to play Phantasy Star Portable Online. Methods currently used by SCHTHack may be unusable for PSP users.
You can also play on http://www.warzoneradio.com
They have a Private blue burst server running also. They said it was created because schtserv is out of hand and wanted people to have a game to play, not a problem.
keep in mind that it was tossers like scthack that ruined the game by duping, backing, and FSOD’ing in the first place any moron who uses their shitty servers are being total hypacrits
the game cant load it keeps saying
“cannot create file data\map_city02_00_00o_s.dat.”
