Sega Closes Online Store After 8 Years Of Operation

12.20.07

The name of the store was “Sega Direct” and was only ever available in Japan. It’s highlights included selling overpriced limited edition Dreamcast titles with lots of extra little nicknacks.

The one I remember the most was the Sonic Adventure Birthday Pack.

This collectors’ display gets a cookie (or ring) for being the coolest thing ever (well, one of the coolest things ever — there are lots of those, actually). It folds out to show three goodies: a gold CD featuring music pulled from various Sonic games, a tiny gold coin commemorating Sonic’s birthday (is it REAL gold?) and a pocket-sized 17-page booklet. According to Sega it will close March 31, 2008. A sign of the times I suppose, but I can’t help feel a little sad as I have fond memories of reading about these packs at NCSX.
