Over $1800 In Video Cards To Run Crysis On Very High
12.12.07
PC Games Hardware magazine has finally done it. They got Crysis to run smooth on very high with a Triple SLI video card setup. The cards alone cost over $1800. I didn’t even know they made power supplies that could output 1200W!
As you can see from this benchmark picture, it barely even gets 37.9 FPS with this insane setup. How many years is it going to take consumer hardware before they can run Crysis the way it was mean to be run and at 60 FPS?

No Comment! LOL
Ok,
This is part of the reason that PC gaming is dying and very slow death but dying. This is because of all the crap that it takes to run modern games, (NOT UNREAL TOURNY 3).
They’re pushing the boundaries and setting a bar high for the future. Everyone expects all games to be able to run perfectly on pc like they do on console (most of the time). It’s good that these games come out that push hardware companies to improve, otherwise consoles will keep making hardware companies drag their feet.
This is why I love PC gaming. Even when I buy a new computer (or in this case, probably two), I can still revisit old games and find them to have good graphics.
Wahh Mahal banget, makes you wonder where all of this is going in the gaming world.. doesnt look too promising for the wallet
Stephen, how is PC Gaming dying? Via what statistics?
Crysis is the exception, most other games run awesome on a $250 Nvidia 8800GT. Unreal 3 for example is almost too smooth as it doesn’t feel “film like”
Crysis pushed the envelope a year too early as they’ve almost built a Pixar rendered graphics with real time physics (without an accelerator card for that) and is doing so in real time. When the next get comes out, (say the 9800) it should run on one card fine.
Take your $500 PS3 (oh, and that’s not a dying product line sony? WHat a POC) and see how graphically (or fun, or controller) it still won’t be able to touch modern PC. THen fast forward 4 years when the PS3 is still a “current’ console and compare it to what a 2012 PC will be cranking out.
That’s why I still play Deus Ex! Hoooray good games from the past!
This is what it takes to run at full graphics. I finished the game on my single core AMD 64 with ATI Radeon 850 XT and 2 megs of memory. Yeah, everything was turned low but it was still the best shooter I have every played and I’ve played most of ‘em. This just means Crysis will be replayable even better on my new machine. Not as bad as Bioshock and MOH Airbourne which won’t even play because they demand shader 3.
Oh shush! Seeking the high end graphics experience is expensive. Like racing is expensive. The fact that PC games are sophisticated enough to demand this setup for the VERY MOST demanding game ever made to run at the very highest setting just tells you where the average PC will be at in three years.
This, and most current games, can be run at setting FAR exceeding the paltry console games common settings on average hardware.
Consoles are a ridiculous lock in mechanism on a mid-range custom enclosured PC. Thus ensuring they will always be behind the leading edge of PC systems and ensuring large profits for their manufacturers who purchase whoe game franchises to lock in a customer base.
Oh my.. i know its a beautiful looking game and all, but what is the point in creating a game like this. by the time the average consumer has the hardware to run it on high, just think what sort of games will be out.
i was reading something about crysis on another site. and some guy said only hardcore gamers play pc games and casual is for console.. well i’ve spent about 3000+ on games for my 360 and accesories over the past couple of years and enjoyed the decent gameplay and high quality graphics. but to just run one game isnt worth squat to me. Especially since fps is the only damn genere in games being made now a days.
Modern games? PC graphics tend to be light years ahead of consoles. When consoles are released, theyre typically on par with what a PC can do, it doesn’t take long for the PC to leapfrog over a consoles capabilities. Plus all those sweet graphic features (pixel shaders, anti aliasing, etc) originated on PCs and were ported over to consoles. The above rig is overkill, but if you ever saw a demo of that game compared to that of a console, the PC wins every time. The only difference is the console is far cheaper.
@ Stephen
you’re a dumbass. you pretty much just said “its dieing because its so high quality that nothing is able to run it.” the fact that you can only upgrade PCs means that you will never be able to play that game on a standard game console(xbox, ps3 etc).
Stephen: dude, it’s Crysis. It’s one game. It was MADE to max out even the highest-end hardware. It doesn’t mean you need a $5K PC setup to enjoy PC gaming. But feel free to switch over to a Wii.
I agree with what Stephen said. I ain’t gonna go and spend 2000$ on video cards (probably 4000$+ on the whole thing) just to play Crysis.
F that.
The ‘pc gaming is dying’ myth has been perpetuated for years.
Last year actually saw an increase in PC games sales, reversing the slow decline seen since the release of the ‘next gen’ consoles.
The same fuss was made over Doom3 (and to a smaller extent Far Cry) when it was released (I think I had to run it at 800×600 on low at the time) and don’t forget this is at 1920×1200, a resolution that isn’t supported by the majority of monitors in homes yet.
Other games in the top 10 (CoD4, Bioshock, Orange Box) don’t have Crysis’ requirements and run rather well even on the budget graphics card I have in my laptop.
The thing is that they are using the extra resources to make a more involving game, such as improved depth of field and bluring, HDR, improved light refraction (water), etc and you really CAN notice a difference, which helps a game to draw the player in more.
As long as the game’s enjoyable enough on the lower detailing settings, then what’s wrong with ‘future proofing’ a game in this fashion and adding a reason to play it again in 5-10 years time ?
ano: Then STFU! lol!
the poster above me is clearly mentally retarded. you don’t HAVE to run Crysis on Very High. just run it on high. it still looks fantastic. forgive me, stephen, but go be 8 years old elsewhere.
PC gaming, happily dying since 1984.
hhmmm….i wonder what those numbers would be if they were using 3 ultra’s…..is 1200 watts actually enough? more power…more hertz…why not? theyve gone this far….
Don’t forget, the drivers will adapt to be geared towards it because it will become the benchmark for gaming. Therefore, the framerate will improve massivelly when they start developing for it.
Then again they are advancing in creating much more powerful games, can anything compare to the visuals and features?
The hit my friend’s machine took from playing it on Vista (about 10fps) vs XP is almost equivalent to the difference of $600 worth of hardware? Real nice.
Because a game pushes the tech limits when its releases means computer gaming is dying…. You Stephen are a moron.
No one said you had to run it on “very high”. Would you have preferred they not include that option?
Can I has cheezburger?
This is something that makes PC gaming far better than console gaming. On a console crysis would look like CRAP. On a PC you can tweak it to take advantage of what you have, on the top or bottom side. The PC gaming market is still growing just as the console gaming market is. Also remember that In Europe PC gaming is the norm, Consolers are the minority.
This is the future of games build the software to anticipate the future of hardware.
This is 5 times more advanced then anything on any console.
PC Gaming is not dying. It is games like this that keep it alive. Crysis is a game that will still have awesome graphics years from now. And even medium graphics, which I can run on my semi-decent system, are still the most jaw-dropping graphics i have ever seen on an game ever.
I have 2x 8800GT SLI setup on a 680i SLI board with 2GB DDR2-1066 ram, on XP Pro.
I modded Crysis system files to allow “very high” settings (w/o DX10 of course, but can you tell the difference? Cause I can’t nor can anyone I’ve showed comparisons to).
I get 30 FPS with this setup. And BOTH 8800GTs together cost less than one 8800 Ultra ($239 each for modest OC’ed edition at local big box).
So, you only need $1800 in video cards if… oh wait, you don’t. I play 1920×1080 resolution on a 57″ screen. System absolutely crushes other games with 150+ fps and has yet to slow down running anything I’ve thrown at it.
LoL. This is why PC gaming will NEVER die. There will always be new tech to push games to the bleeding edge of technology, and there will always be people who will pay to see what the very limits of technology can do. It’s interesting to see the technological advances of silicon evolution in progress.
I know I clicked the link because this is really interesting to me. How about you? I don’t think PS4 or Xbox4 will be this powerful! Can’t wait to see the future.
True, PC gaming is dying because of this ridiculous hardware requirement to get the full potential of a title. So you spend $1800 on video cards alone and your game doesn’t even run 40 fps? And how many other new titles will require this setup? Very few if any but I’m willing to bet none. Crysis is not worth this much. It has nothing ground breaking in terms of gameplay. I could buy a 360 for a fraction of that and still get to play all the next gen stuff very smoothly. Haha PC gaming.
It’s not that it takes a whole lot to run modern games, you can do it just fine with a 6600GT and a couple gigs of ram, you just can’t run it on “very high graphics” and a resolution of 1920×1280 (which is ridiculously high). Most every game will play just fine if you run 1280 x 1024 and turn the graphics down just a little bit.
Double LoL.
TECHNOLOGY.
Whew. There I said it one more time just to be safe.
Awesome rig though, and great post. I’m sure we’d all build it tomorrow if we could afford to. Then, ya know, rebuild it with new stuff the day after tomorrow.
Reminds me of all the PCs I built to keep up with Unreal back in the day. (Dual Voodoo2s was highend!)
For the moment, Crysis is THE game to push your hardware to its limits. I for one am happy to see that it’s actually possible to turn it up this high. Gives me hope, and me makes me wanna build more machines. I like that.
Don’t worry, someday this will be a lowend rig and game!
Arm.. I think your bottle neck is Vista. Try it on XP with the DirectX10 hack.
When will people realize that some game devs try and produce games that will be able to expand in the next few years. The developers of the new crytek engine has stated repeatedly that their goal was to make the game be able to look prettier a few years down the road. It’s not about pc games dying. This is one of the many reasons pc games are BETTER than console… their looks can expand with time.
Nuckin Futs
“…part of the reason that PC gaming is dying…”
Bull. Computer gaming is less expensive in relation to console gaming than ever before. Throw a sub $200 Radeon 3850 in any relative modern PC and it becomes a respectable gaming computer.
Just because many games will scale to offer a higher quality experience on superior hardware doesn’t mean the games don’t work well on less godly hardware.
i wouldn’t completely trust this experiment wothout more info…
first of all, what are the other specs of the computer? If the computer has 1 gig of 667 Mhz RAM and a Pentium 4 proccessor, than no wonder the FPS sucks. Now if that computer consisted of at least 2 gigs of RAM at around 1250 Mhza and a kickass dual-core CPU at 3.5 Ghz, then there’s something to worry about.
second, the fact that its running on DX10 on Vista plays a huge part in the FPS. the truth is, Vista takes up a lot of memory, enough that it slows down the FPS of almost any DX10 compatible game, even on the beefiest computers. Unless you have the RAM (recommended is 2 gig) Vista WILL slow your comp.
luckily, Crysis settings can be manipulated so that one gets DX10 features while running XP, which would definitely speed up the game.
Lastly, just like most software does not unlock the full potential of dual-core CPUs, most games do not utilize the full potential of cards in SLI. So until then, three cards in SLI does not mean triple the FPS… It has to do with how the game is programned in terms of GPU memory and such.
PC Gaming is not dying… your a fool if you believe that.
In less than a year you will need the equivalent of one of those cards to play at 60fps on very high. Someone has to push the industry along and aim for higher goals. Soon games will be so close to real life in looks they wont need to go any further. All that will leave to develop is faster cards for higher rez.
oops… didnt see the specs at the top…
so yeah, it looks like crysis looks too good to be true…
PC gaming isnt dying. Take the amount of money it costs to buy a PS3/360 and instead put it into upgrading a PC to make it ready for crisis and youll get about the same performace if you know how to configure your PC. I would like to see any console run Crisis at max settings. True console is taking over, but only because consoles have finally caught up enough to offer acceptable graphics/options to that of PC, and making a game for 1 console is easier than making a game for every PC configuration. PC gaming is still superior in the graphics/interface wars.
Theres power supplies that could output 1200W like last year…
I disagree with someone’s comment of a PC gaming industry in decline. It’s games like these and maybe some 3D artists (less than 1 % of all users) that’s driving the hardware industry forward.
Let’s face it, who as the end user would require an nVidia GeForce 8800GTX unless it’s for gaming? I’m glad Crysis has such steep requirement for hardware, it’ll make sure the hardware developer come out with something that’s actually worth upgrading to.
1200 watt is pretty impressive. Ive seen a 2000 watt ATX power supply before. Hmm it seems that if you are on a 115v 14 amp circuit the maximum power available before blowing the breaker would be 1610 watts. Time to step up to 220v.
Rofl, I’d like to see the computers they developed it on XD
3 video cards and it still can’t hit 60 fps? that is what i call a crysis
I can output 60fps on very high with just one 8800, but then again your using vista and i’m on xp.
agreed that this test should have been done on XP. you would be getting a lot closer to 60 frames than with vista (the useless sloth it is). DX10 Hack FTW…
Crytek just seems to make games that make the hardware of the day simply weep for mercy. But remember when Far Cry came out and IT was the insane game that NOBODY could play because of the system requirements? Hardware improves very quickly and it really won’t be too long before Crysis becomes somewhat outdated.
PC game are dying based on pure economics. From a development standpoint, consoles offer unified platforms for development allowing for optimization that extend the console life as developer get better at what they do. You know what you are going to have to develop for hardware wise whether it be Xbox 360 or ps3. With pc, you have to develop with almost infinite variables giving way to less than optimal performance wise pc games.
Everybody talks about potential here for crysis, but I will bet the house that the development cost to profit ratio will never be anywhere near xbox 360 or even ps3 games.
When you have such a small potential base because of cost for people to buy your game, there aren’t going to a lot of games developed for that small base because at the end of the day people need to eat.
PC gaming is the best we might not have all the sales from 9-10 year boys screaming at you in high-pitched voices but we got Mods, the best format for gaming mouse and keyboard, way better graphics, and new gametypes such as in CS:S , surf, zombie mod (year round), player created maps, make your own maps ( not just with barrels and crates), and
other gametypes that you wouldn’t understand, we also have the ability to change skins via fpsbanana.com
PC gaming always opens the way for consoles. PC’s are used as both a market place and test bed for other technologies. Look at PS3 and XBOX, they got their ideas and working knowledge from the PC markets years of work.
I just picked up UT3 and the game runs flawless and is extremely beautiful on a Q6600 + 8800GT.
I pick up video cards when games I want to play come out, IE UT3, Starcraft 2, COD4. Crysis is cool because it forces suppliers to push manufacturers to come out with a card that can handle the high end game. It in turn somewhat forces supply because the game demands a higher card to hit its full potential. Again though high end gaming is a small part of the PC community.
The end result is the median family home would probably most likely have a Wii or XBOX360/PS3 as their gaming station versus a top end PC.
By all means though consoles in my opinion aren’t nearly as pretty as a high end PC.
Buy a different game…
Why does it matter if you are playing on a console or a PC, if you like games you should be playing on both. If you dont like games stick to your PC only and the two games made for PCs a year?
Also, I dont know how to use punctuations properly.
If you look into NVIDIA Control Panel you’ll quickly notice that SLI is disabled for the Crysis profile. I have a SLI dual 8800GT setup and the game runs perfectly with the DX9 very high hack on XP (which isn’t much different from the visual quality of the real very high), and I don’t even have SLI enabled for the game since it’s actually slower on SLI, instead I’m using the second card for 16x AA.
With this setup, my frame rates fluctuates between 15fps and 50fps (at an average of 25fps) at 1680×1050, 16x AA, and 0x AF. And while I mentioned my frame rates go as low as 15fps at times, it only when I’m using the binoculars to look at distant places and forcing the game to render everything at maximum detail due to the reduced FOV.
http://www.crysis-online.com/?id=449 – Crysis Very High in DX9.
Um, Whatever happened to optimizing 3D engines? I guess just Shake and Bake a game and let the consumers buy the hardware to run all the slop.
I see 2 problems with this test setup…
1. 1920×1200 rez
2. Running it on Vista
C’mon wtf would you even want to run it on Vista? Everyone knows that games are running like crap on Vista.
I would like to see this same test run at 1280×1024 and on Windows XP Pro. Running this test on Vista and then bitching about framerates is just plain retarded.
i think:
you can use 10 8800ultra in sli mode, but it is useless if you dont have the right O.S., the right CPU supported with enough “fast” RAM.
I Agree with jaypee68: try it with a lower rez, or change CPU and RAM if you want more FPS with Crysis…the CPU and RAM used in this configuration, are a big bottleneck (IMHO)
whats REALLY killing the game industry is the fact that people aren’t willing to keep up with the technology. Same thing for everything else these days, marketting holds back technology to scrape money out of the economy.
LOL wait till the nvidia 9series comes out! the single 9800 ultra will get over 30 frames in very high mode!
PC gaming is the best!
Screw upgrading my PC so I can play a game.
As a PC gamer, with a 360 and a PS3 I still will never ever say PC gaming is dying, why? because its not, PC gaming is for the most hardcore gamers, its still the best experience to me, no matter how powerful and cheap consoles can get they will never ever compare to the ultimate feeling of power streaming in you PC. if you cant take the heat get out of the kitchen..
(prices are in pound sterling [roughly double the dollar]) Making hardware cost less takes time. for example in 1999, a 3Dfx voodoo 3 3500 16MB AGP card with TV output would cost you £194.99, and that was a pretty good card (for 1999).
Hell 64MB of DIMM RAM would cost about £100.00. Now a 1GB wouldnt cost you half of that if you know where to look, and its not like its the same technology, is DRR2 ect.
The fact is that yeah, Crysis takes the piss out of technology at the minute, but you have to remember that with time, things become cheaper, and it’ll cost less to run it at high quality. (which makes me laugh at the comment that says by the time we can run crysis there will be other good games out to play… whats your point? they’ll be requiring the same sort of hardware that crysis does, thus defeating the object of your argument, unless you’re disillusioned enough to think that the games 5 years down the line will be run on the same shit thats in our PC’s now)
Yeah it might be another 5 years down the line, but if a game is good, then its worth playing, just like people still play mario and sonic games 10 or 15 years after they’ve come out, because face it, games are getting more advanced, and you can sit there and bitch about how your new computer isnt able to run an amazing new title, or you can deal with it, just like someone who wants to make their car go faster, buy an induction kit ect, dont moan about how slow your car is and how its not keeping up with todays cars ect.
consoles are always going to provide a stable environment for games to be run on, but games are developed by PCs in the first place, and consoles are 1 specification, PC spec covers dozens of rated graphics cards, ammounts of ram, hard drive speeds, and direct x versions. So one developer pushes it to the max, and everyone starts complaining. What i dont get is why people supporting consoles even have an argument. consoles are built up of new components that are developed to be released in the near future for PCs (although these tend to be stripped down versions of the PC versions). I feel sorry for ignorant people who say things like, PC gaming will die, when there console equivilents depend on the fact that PC developers are making hardware that pushes the limit of a pc. Without this process, we’d be stuck with ps2 and xbox standard games still, because hell, if the pc developers didnt throw the console developers something to work on, they’d be F’d up the A.
You cannot justify ‘PC gaming is dieing’, I mean how long is it gonna be before people stop playing World of Warcraft? Until world of warcraft 2010 comes out is when. I dont want to take sides, i have a 360 and a PC, and from time to time i get pissed off at both of them, (for example the 360, i spend 300 quid on the package with a20GB hard drive, 2 years later they bring the same console out, paint it black, make it do the stuff that the original should’ve done, give it 100GB more than mine has which they are selling at 129.99 standalone, and calling it the elite. they also released a hddvd player. doesnt this provide the same problem as PCs, always having to upgrade to keep up with the standard?). And with the pc, i have to overclock it to run stuff like bioshock, which is fair play really, and yeah i’ve melted a few processors foolishly cause i didnt initially wanna buy an intercooling system, but you like and learn. Just as the final nail in the coffin the PS3 has something like 7 processors and 1 power pc processor. So it boasts a GHz speed of about 12Ghz+.
But my friend who works for Sony rep europe (who i have frequent arguments over which next gen console is better) informed me that the other 7, non power pc processors, run at 3.2ghz, sure, but they have the processor capability of a pentium 1.
Seriously. Anyone who knows about processors, and their processing capabilities knows that no matter how fast the processor works, if its not capable of processes that concern graphics (x3dnow for example) then they are effectively just relief processors for the 1 main processor or any ram processes that need to be carried out along side the CPU (whereas the 360 has 3 dual core processors, all of which are power pc rated… if only it had more RAM).
Yeah i’ve ranted on, so my point is, don’t disregard PC or Console gaming, because they’re both good, and with console development relying on games like Crysis to set a hardware boundry for them to work on, I think console fanatics should shut their pie hole. Its all good, and if you can’t pony up the cash, don’t bitch about it, wait 8 years or get over it. Sorry about that.
Stephen: great troll. sucked ‘em right in!
DYING. DYING. DYING.
I am sick and tired of seeing “dieing”. “Dieing” is NOT a damn word. THIS IS THE KIND OF THING YOU LEARN IN GRADE SCHOOL. WAKE THE HELL UP.
something for shits and giggles.
http://cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7195/index.html
shes 8700W
Completely agree with Loz. If it wasn’t for PC games pushing the boundries, then the hardware developers wouldn’t have any reason to continually slave through month by month on new technology. Which is ‘The’ technology going into Consoles.
Kill off PC gaming, and consoles will have nowhere to get blazing hardware from, they would have to develop the hardware themselves, and to really point this out: Everyone overlooks the powerplant of the xbox360 and PS3 are POWER PC processors…PC…PC!! Wonder where that came from hey..
Also, whoever said “Oh my.. i know its a beautiful looking game and all, but what is the point in creating a game like this. by the time the average consumer has the hardware to run it on high, just think what sort of games will be out.”
Well thats what we said when farcry came out. Its what we’ll say when ‘Crysis II’ comes out.
The moment someones pointing a gun to your head and going “PUT IT ON VERY HIGH OR I’LL BLOW YOU AWAY” you can bitch about high requirements.
Check the options for your current favourite PC game. The majority of you probably dont even have that on its highest settings.
Alot of people aren’t taking into account that pc’s can be upgraded, in a year Graphics cards will (most likely, seeing as cards improve vastly over a year) be able to play this at very high for much cheaper.
Anyhow, between consoles and PCs theres no question which one will be able to have better, more demanding games. (PC) But for public demand, where most people can’t afford a very expensive gaming system, something like an xbox 360 which you can get for $300 and not have to upgrade for 4 or so years, can be very popular. I guarantee you many more people will play a new game on an xbox than will be able to play on a pc, at least for the new future.
pretty bad when people have to upgrade there computers every year cause of games.
They should make a game look good with whats out on the market now , not whats going to be on the market next year.
My Xbox360 plays some great looking games and only cost 400 bucks . My computer cost 1500 bucks and i can barely run Oblivion on it now. And your telling me next year .. the game will look better.
@ stephen
for starters, First person shooters on a console is the worst thing in the world.
second, lets see you make your own maps and mods models on a console. not going to happen.
third. who said you had to spend that much money on a pc to get the experience? you can upgrade your PC for about $500-$600 (what does a nex gen console cost?) and play any PC game out there all the way back to doom1 and earlier. talk about backwards compatible. and the possibilities with a pc are endless (what you you think they develope those console games on?, probably $700 computers. they don’t need much more)
fourth, since when is pc gameing dieing. i think world of warcraft (pc/mac only) is the worlds most played game for the last 4 years, name a console game that can even come close to 1/3rd.
System Requirements for Crysis states a 256MB Graphics Card Minimum. I assume this means it will take a Minimum of a 256MB Graphics card to install… Playing seems like another story…
i need a new comp
Okay, first off. This ENTIRE test is complete bullshit. What it basically boils down to is that Crysis running under Windows Vista/DX10 doesn’t run very well.
It’s well known that you can modify the .cfg files in Crysis (yes I have done this myself) to display very high detail settings in XP/DX9 minus a few tiny things like the cinematic-like overlay which really makes the tinyest of differences when the quality of the graphics is so high.
My rig is a dual-core C2D E6700 @ 2.66Ghz, 2Gb Corsair 1066Mhz RAM, an Asus P5K mobo and a SINGLE GeForce 8800 GTX Ultra, 768Mb version.
I played the ENTIRE game on Very High detail (with the .cfg modifications the option is disabled but the results are exactly the same when you select high) with a constant 35+ FPS. By that standard a tri-SLi setup running Very High detail in Windows XP/DX9 would hit maybe 100+ FPS steady.
In conclusion, don’t believe everything you read, this test is bullshit and you can play Crysis DX9 in Very High if you so wish, there are plenty of tutorials on the web to do so.
Don’t get so sucked in.
FYI, the 8800GT isn’t as powerful as the 8800GTX Ultra. It’s more in line with an 8800GTS, so don’t get all excited when they use 3 8800GTS-alike cards.
I really couldn’t care less about PC gaming anymore. To me, it’s basically a dead platform. Forget about the high cost required to run games at supposedly better-than-console graphics (which no game besides Crysis has yet to prove, btw. Every game, from Bioshock, to UT3, to COD4, has yet to show PCs having any significant difference from consoles in terms of performance and gameplay). The platform is just devoid of quality AAA titles, with few exceptions. What great exclusive does PC have this holiday season, 1 game? Crysis? Great, now it’s between that and WOW, and I couldn’t give two sh**s about MMOs. Consoles actually have exclusives, new quality titles coming in on a monthly basis for me to play.
I’m not an RTS or an MMORPG fan, so there really isn’t a hell of a lot of stuff in it for me on the PC.
morons who think that PC gaming is going out because of this.
How many xbox 360 or ps3s do you know that actually GAME at 1920 x 1200 then top it off with AA?
yea, exactly. NONE.
Console lovers are lucky to get 720p anymore. If they lower the res to 720p they would be getting over 200fps.
I like consoles since they are easy to use and no spyware or viruses. But, no one can say (unless ignorant) that pc gaming is dying. I can build a setup under the price of a ps3 and still dominate games and look 10x better than the ps3
SLI is silly, It really doesn’t do much to increase performance. He should have stuck with one card. Also take Anti-Aliasing off since Resolutions over 1024×768 take away lots of the blockyness.
Also don’t forget over clocking! My 7900 GT plays the game on High on 1280×768 at a decent frame rate and still looks orgasmic. I mean 30 FPS is very reasonable, that’s how fast TV’s run, it’s plenty smooth on the eyes.
you are aware that the human eye perceives 30 fps the same as 100 fps right? it operates at roughly 28 fps. any higher and you are mereley wasting perfectly good resouces.
OK So PC gaming isn’t dead. It will never die. We need PC gaming to push the graphics envelope so that consoles feel the need to improve themselves (if it wasn’t for PC gaming we’d all still be playing NES)
But PC gaming presents problems for the modern day non-nerd, non-hardcore gamer. First off, no one wants to use a mouse and keyboard to play their games. It’s confusing and certainly doesn’t lend itself to multiplayer. Then the fact that you have to INSTALL the game, it has REQUIREMENTS which may or may not be met, you have a lot of reading and disc changing and serial number entering to get past before you ever get to play your game! And then, to top it all off, it crashes if your comp isn’t good enough, so you’re searching on the internet for hacks and mods to make the game run smoothly. I mean am I wrong ppl?
Modern consoles such as the PS3 and the 360 have a leg up on PC gaming for several reasons, such as the fact that they can be immediately set up to run on an HDTV. Now, you can hook up a PC to your HDTV, but i doubt your computer has a TOSLINK port, or component output, or HDMI output (yes I know DVI is a common output, but that means a new cable and still no HD sound). Consoles have ease of use and consistency going for them. You know what you have and you know what games you can play. Theres no installing and no requirements to be met, just turn it on and pop in the disc. Easy.
I love PC gaming, especially Starcraft, but I find the 360 and the PS3 to be a lot more fun nowandays, what with COD4 being the ultimate 4-man split screen action to come out since Goldeneye. If you have a HDTV, and friends (real life not from internets), consoles are just better. ’nuff said.
This is why PC gaming sucks. You can only properly play a game five years after it comes out, unless you don’t mind it looking like Quake II or it running at 5fps. And somehow these games still manage to run slowly even when you’ve turned the graphics down to their lowest.
Can I play Crysis on my super-high-end comp?
(1.2GHz Athlon, 256MB SDRAM and Radeon 9550@9600PRO)
Some of us rather have their gaming machines do more than just game. PC gaming will never die.
guys…. its a game… its freaking fun… like.. take it easy?
The game is unbelievable. As said it will play lower. I tried it all the way low and it was still stunning!Game play is just incredible. I like the idea of a game that isn’t last gen like UT3, IMO. I run a 8800GTX XXX edition, with a Q6600 Quad core and two gigs 800DDR2 in Vista 64. It lags sometimes on full settings. But I believe that is due to memory. 2 gigs is recomended for Vista alone. High end gaming is sure to need more. I ran a monitor in the game and yep it was the ram. So next week I will get 2 more gigs (80.00 before a 40.00 rebate at Tiger Direct). The game is worth it and it is future proof! Mad? What if it was like BioShock? THAT is what you need to bitch about. That game is old gen AND it wont run on half of the poor guys’ video cards. Beutiful? Maybe. But the gameplay is cool. NOT next gen or future proof. Lets see games that last. ALSO the test here was with 2 gigs in Vista. It doesnt like that, wants more. NVidia’s monitor showed me that all day today while I played it. Memory was maxed out the whole game and it got laggey when it hit 100% for the mem monitor.
WELL,I THINK ITS MORE THEN WANT PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR IN GAMES, IF YOUR DUMB AND CANT FINGER OUT A KEY BORD A MOSE, THEN A PS3 IS COOL FOR U. U CAN TELL EVERY ONE HOW COOL U ARE HAVING ONE. U FIT IN A GROUP OF PEOPLE, BUT YOUR GRAPHICS ARE JUST THE SAME. WERE PC EVERY ONE DIFF AND CAN PLAY THE GAME NORMEL OR HIGH. ITS JUST PCS CAN HAVE MORE THEN ONE SCREEN, CAN USE A XBOX 360 CONTROL, ALSO IF U HAVE THE CASH U COULD GET VR GLASSES, THERES 1000S OF STUFF U COULD PUT IN A USB.LET SEE PS3 DO THAT. WERE CONTROLS LIKE 360 ARE LIMITED TO WANT YOUR BUDDY AS. ANY DELL THAT YOUR HIGH CLASS DAD HAS IN THE OFFICE YOU HAVE A CHOICE $300 XBOX OR 500 DOLLARS FOR PS3 OR YOU COULD SLAP A $600 GRAPHICS CARD IN THE DELL WITCH WILL LAST YOU FAR MORE THE PS3, ALSO GAMES ARE CHEAPER AND VARY CHEAP IF U KNOW HOW TO GET THEM FOR FREE BY SOME PC GUY HACKING THEM AND PUTTING ON LIMEWIRE FOR U SO. DEMOS ARE DOWNLOAD AWAY. PATCHS AND GAMES LIME FEAR HAVE EXTRA PACKS YOU GET FOR NEW LEVELS.I COULD GO ON. JUST I HOPE YOUR HAPPEN IN 3 YEARS WITH YOUR 36O O YA THE HARD WARE IN 85% USED UP ALREADY. PC GAMES WILL HAVE TO DOWN GRADE THERE GAMES JUST TO PLAY ON THAT OLD 3 CORE SYSTEM WHEN I WILL HAVE 8 TO 16 CORES BY 2009. BUY THEN I WILL BE VR BUY….
u dont need to spend 1800$ to play game on very high
i can build u pc for 600-700$ can run crysis on very high @1024-768 and get over than 30fps
sigh realy you people are fools
first off vista will lag anygame at high end with only 2 gig of ram secondly the cpu only has 8mb L2 cache quite low for the quad core
thirdly the rez is just too big or dont you people read your card specs anymore
i must say one thing test the system with another 2 gig and then bitch you will get more FPS than on a min spec setting for vista
now last and not least XP64 runs dx10 just fine and on sli8800gt i can run on very high nicely and my frames beat the 30fps that is displayed above
my specs are quite easy to afford
amd athlon X2 dual core 4gig ddr2 (dont know what hertz but its kingston)two 500gig hdd on an Asus m2n32 sli deluxe mobo
yeah the system cost me 1700(australian) but i can play just fine
and will do well into the future
infact i am planing my next upgrade atm
looking at water cooling and a quad cor system i know there isnt much out that will use the technology but hey why not prepare for what is to come
and for all you consol gamers i own a ps3 and an xbox360 but you dont get the quality you get sitting on your pc playing games voice chat and xfire aswell as playing your favorit music through winamp (or streaming as some of my mates do) just try to do that with your 360 or ps3 i got linux on my ps3 and it still doesnt compare
yeah for the geral public 1700 is probably too much to spend on a system but you can now build the system i ru for around the same price you bought your ps3 for and i dont need to upgrade i want to upgrade that is the beauty of owning and play a computer
Yeah it gets out of date but you can still play all your favs and not have to update or pull out you PS2 to play your favorit games or did you all forget that
wake up PC gaming is leading the market not dying there are more games for you computer than there are for your 360 or the s**** titles on the ps3
any non gamer will pick up a console and go wow look at the gfx but that is because the games are set to the specs of the console your pc games vary because there isnt just on spec some ppl like the game in 640×480 i like mine in 1400×1050 but tell me when you can change cell shading and grass efects and watter affects on your console
and for the lovely person who is b****ing about the keybord its calld plug in a gamepad…..
oh and why is it hard to get hd on your comp wtf are you on most mobos under 200 have hd already or are you behind the times that far
thats all i have to say i appoligise for my spelling but yeah i suck at english cause i am a gamer i talk more than i type:P
Just wait till you can QUAD SLI 9800 GX2 on the SKULLTRAIL.
Actually, there was an article on Tom’s Hardware that mentioned that there were some driver and patch issues with Crysis, and currently running the game on 3 cards in SLI was no different or even worse than running the game on two.
I have 3 acronyms for all who think pc gaming is dying. MMORPG, FPS, and lets not forget RTS. As long as those still apply than I don’t see PC gaming going anywhere but up in the future.
PC Gaming is unfortunately dieing. Please look up sales figures for XBox360, Wii and PC.
Compare and the re-asses your diatribes.
MMORPG is the last bastion of the PC but it is starting to move across. Why? Because game studios are spending MUCH more effort developing tools for consoles (see 1st paragraph), future PC games will be ports of console games. Painfull but true.
when i said sales figures I meant games sales figures.
here is a sample
2007 Sales
COD4 PC : 383,000
COD4 XBOX360 : 1,570,000
COD4 PS3 : 444,000
This is a MASSIVE difference from 2005/2006 is leading to game studios adjusting their development efforts.
Will they stop producing games tomorrow, NO, will the quality suffer YES. Will that spiral the situation. YES
Consoles suck they are made for little children who like playing shitty games and are dumb as hell.
Just look at the fucking comments
Moron nr 1
Pc gaming is dying because um um um um um um i dont know why but it sure is dying.
Moron nr 2
Pc gaming is dying because um because it has much better looking games than my shitty xbox
Moron nr 3
Pc gaming is dying because im an elitist dumbass who thinks a 300$ piece of trash can top a 1000$ machine.
yea consolfags go play your shitty halo in the meantime il play better shit like crysis.
And no the game is fucking awesome im on my 2nd playtrough already
well to start with i have a question..do you think the devs at crytek used a standard machine to create this game? dont think so. software devs have always pushed the limits of any hardware , damn ppl were moaning about the same stuff way back when i had a sinclair spectrum 48K.. also its not just about gfx cards and cpu’s. u gotta look at bus speeds to and from devices, your mobo etc too.. i wouldnt touch a console tbh, reason is, most are geared to lower resolution, for TV and refresh rate is usually geared at 60Hz for TVs, now think how much more detail is shown at higher res and refresh on a pc compared to a console.. catch my drift… if the answer is no, then stop posting and start reading about what that noise making box is actually doing by your monitor
im about half way there in settings i run every thing on medium with no lag. my specs are a core 2 duo e4500 overclocked to 2.6ghz and a 8800 gt core clock overclocked to 660mhz
people are saying that the sales for game systems are much higher than the sale for pc game systems. um i dont think they can track that because most of the pc game system are built custom like mine. yes i built mine myself
suma U guys talk alota crap – I got a Quad core 2,6GHZ 1 sli graphic (asus)En8600GT Magic,(If I buy another its Gaurenteed Very high graphics) 6 Gig Ram and Can run Crysis High/Very high only the water is on high the rest very high – nothong special even running my pc at 450W no damage?? U tell me where this $1800 bullshit cums 4rm – I Paid like $2000 for the whole thing And I Live in a third world country – South Africa – never read so much shit in my life suma u d best – other like stephan what a cracker
oh yeah and this all on a 32″ Sony Bravia HD TV – also try running it in windowed mode if i do I get full graphics but i also do boost my GPU
Later BO?YS
whiners
my rig Q9550 3,5 Ghz )overclocked , nvidia 780i mainboard , DDR3 1333mhz , 9800GX2 in SLI , 1000watt antec powersupply
65 fps mostly of the time some drops till 55fps on max settings
Not again *facepalm*
Guys if you are a console gamer and think you are being witty telling a PC gamer to come here, learn a little about PC gaming before declaring how it all works. A console gamer friend of mine said to follow this link for proof PC gaming is over priced, then I see one of the most ridicules tests I have seen to date.
$1800 of GPU, what are these people smoking? Stop trying to run the most graphically advanced game on the planet at resolutions consoles can barely touch, how about that? If people are going to declare PC gaming dead because of the hardware required to do this lets see a console do better smart arse?
Mallert, go die. nForce 780i sli doesnt support DDR3@1333Mhz
crysis is just awseome! I bought a new computer to play it ( 3.0 quad core, 16 gb ram and a dual 512 nvidea graphic card ) and it ran so smooth as clear as hell. it was way better than games on my ps3 and and xbox 360.
Unbelievable. period.
Can some one please tell me what kind of hardware will run crysis on high settings so I know what to build for my next computer. All I know is that 2 8800s will run it high but I don’t know what else?
David Burtner : I’m suprised your rig even booted with 2 megs of Ram. Hell of a PC you got there, the thing can load with barely any hardware.
**** MAYBE HE’S THE KEY TO THE FUTURE!!! HE HAS FOUND A SOLUTION****
Thanks for the post
Lets just hope Farcry 2 will have the same graphics setup as Crysis to get those graphics card company’s on there feet and stop playing with arcade stile games
in theory, taking into account the graphical quality, cost and acccesibility the next Console platforms to come out will make the Console platform the main purpose gaming platform, if you take into account that the future generation are going to relate Games to XBOX and Playstaton rather than their P.C.
ROFL that rig is way out of date. lol
You can easily get a lot better ratings with just a 2-way CrossfireX setting.
just get 2 RADEON HD 4870 X2’s
at HALF the price of this!!
check the benchmarks people. besides what ever wacko said PC was dying is a complete and utter moron. Console games should be the ones dying. Consoles are just limited PC’s that you cant update their hardware and go for extreme modding and gaming. Besides I can play games with better quality than a PS3, XBOX360, and a WII put together.
You dont need a graphics card to play Crysis anyway. I can run several max settings with an onboard card.
Go look up the Hardware of a console and compare it to a modern day PC. (PS3 has the best hardware. Blu-Ray was kind of stupid too. A Blu-ray drive costs 300 bucks so without it the PS3 would cost the same as a 360 but perform better.
Besides you can build PC’s just as good as Alienwares top-dog Gaming PC’s with just $2,000 bucks.
Crysis “was” built to be ONLY PC, until recent because of all the piracy so console gamers are lucky that they can even play Crysis and Fary Cry 2. And it was MEANT to last for a LONG time so they made the graphics and maps so graphically intense that It would push gaming to the next level. (It was not built for 2006’s modern day next-gen PC’s, it was built for current day next, next gen PC’s and beyond.)
PC’s within the last couple years have grown to be so famous that a lot of gamers are beginning to feel PC gamingand wonder if their XBOX360 was really worth it.
Why is VALVe and Crytek PC mainly? Why not ask them?
Modding is the number one reason for PC gaming
When a PC gamer buys a game he isn’t looking to play that game and let that be it
When you buy Crysis you get the CryEngine 2 so you can make your own games and programmers rush to develope games off these engines. go to MODDB and look up Half Life 2.
Letss face it mods are better than the games themselves! You dont buy Half Life 2 to just play it. You buy so you can play all the 1,000’s of free mods like the upcoming Black Mesa: Source, or the upcoming SMOD based games. The game that redone HL2. Dont beleive check this stuff out or go to youtube. Look at garrysmod. I’m sorry if a console gamer has never heard of it. Its a PC only game you buy off steam that takes every game made by VALVe and puts em all together and gives hundreds of neat tools and functions so you can build things, fight, play multiplayer, do stunts, build rockets, fight with over 100+ different weapons, play with models and npc’s from various games like legend of zelda, or Crysis, Halo.
take pictures, make movies. (check out JSXANATOS and Janus Syndicate)
there are mods for almost every PC game that exists!
I lolled real hard when I saw that when a really good portal mod came it it took the XBOX360 half a year, an extra hard drive upgrade for the xbox360’s lame capacity, and 1200 Microsoft points to just to play a simple mod lol!
On top of that I can play PS2, PS1, GBA, some DS, SNES, NES, Gamecube, and many other consoles on my PC.
Besides who doesn’t like playing FPS games with a keyboard and mouse better than a lame controller. Easier to aim with a keyboard and mouse. The n00bs can stick with their 360 controllers while playing games on their PC.
here is more proof n00bs get your facts straight.

If your going for performance, high quality gaming at low cost, then PC is for you
unfortunately you are _ALL_ missing the point. modern computers are not made for games. i will not get into what they are used for – if you guys are so smart – you tell me.
