“I do not consider it a success so far.”

Is that guy an idiot or what? How is 500k a huge failure?

  1. 500k is a huge failure compared to 2.6 million Halo 3. It’s got a long row to hoe to get up to those numbers.

  2. How much did Microsoft spend on adversiting!

    Nintendo probally spent nothing.

  3. Haha, this guy is an idiot. Maybe it didn’t sell 3 million copies in the first week because Nintendo didn’t spend a billion dollars on promotion like MS did for Halo3? Nintendo is already making money on the Wii; they’re not struggling to break even like MS’s XBox 360 division is.

The Hollywood business model is not the way the videogame industry should be run. You can’t judge a game’s success by how many copies you sell in the first week, you have to give word-of-mouth a chance to get around.

  4. I agree, the guy is an idiot. Production/Marketing cost of Mario, probably $10-$20 million, $50 dollar a game times 500k copies equal $25M. Second week, sold another 400K copies of all profit.

Halo 3, production and marketing, probably $50M+
4M sold times $60 equals $240M give or take.

Second and 3rd best selling Wii game, Wii Sports 6.7M, Wii Play, 3M. If you don’t count Wii Sports, Mario Party 2M

Second and 3rd best selling Xbox 360 game, Gears of War, 4M. Oblivion 1.4M.

Don’t seem like Xbox 360 have that many more top sellers than Wii to me. Looks pretty equal.

Who cares about numbers? Maybe it is a failure in business; the game is amazing. The true failures are those who still haven’t played it.
